Horseshoe LakeThe largest natural lake wholly within Illinois lies near Granite City, on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River near St. Louis. Horseshoe Lake (dnr.state.il.us) was initially created by the flooding river. Over time, flooding patterns and channels changed, leaving a permanent lake, or oxbow lake, independent of the river. Anglers find the shallow lake environment perfect for blue gill and channel catfish. Horseshoe State Park offers camping facilities, and hikers can enjoy several miles of trails, including a birding trail, where snowy egrets and blue herons feast on snails and clams. The park includes picnic areas and volleyball courts. (info source)
