This week has been very exciting because I am implementing a new boys running team at my son's school. I've been busy working with a friend and getting everything put into place! We did our first communication in our school newsletter that simply said "4th and 5th Grade Boys Running Team coming this Spring". We stated a few details but not much! Well, surprise surprise within 2 days the team has filled up regarding interested boys! I can only have 14 boys on the team if there is only one certified coach (me). I truly did not know if I would even get 14 kids to sign up for this running team, but I did. So now I just recruited a friend to come and get certified with me so we can offer this to more boys! Woot woot! Come Spring our town might be flooded with boys running around and hopefully not getting lost! Maybe not everyone signs up and registers when it's time, but I think it's promising and very COOL that boys want to RUN and be part of this new program! I did have a moment this week where I thought "Julie, what the heck are you doing", but after receiving emails from parents and how they love the idea it confirmed it's a great program to put into place! It was cute because last night I told my son Riley that I think the team is full and I said "Riley, I never confirmed if you wanted to be on this team or not" And he said "No, mom I don't want to be part of it". I smiled and said "Okay, then at least it opens up one more spot for another boy". And he jumped up and said "NO MOM, I WANT to be on the running TEAM I was just kidding". He can be a joker like me and I could tell he was just trying to get a rise out of me when he said No, so I thought I'm going with this one too! Anyway. It melted my heart when he sounded so sincere about being on the team. All week when I've been telling him what I'm doing and who expressed interest. He's just been like "okay, mom" in his cool 10 year old fashion. Anyway. Makes me proud that I took an idea and made it happen. Over the last couple of years our school has done "girls on the run" and I always thought "now why isn't there a boys running team". Anyone that knows me… knows when I get an idea I usually turn it into a reality and make it happen! I was thinking though my son better watch out because if I like coaching this running team & I can get these boys to listen to me. Then I just might sign up to coach his football team next Fall (smile)! I'll break the glass ceiling of all the male football coaches and add a little extra spice to the field. The first new rule would be… NO FOOTBALL PRACTICE in the month of August. Instead my football team would come to Long Lake and get a taste of lake life for bootcamp and enjoy playing in the water, being a kid, and bonding like they have never bonded before on a team! After a week or so of water skiing, wake boarding, knee boarding, etc I'd create some strong little muscles in their little arms and legs too!
Speaking of football. In December I hurt my left arm (triceps) playing tackle football with my boys in the snow. I am happy to report that finally THIS WEEK the pain is gone and I have been able to get back to all my favorite workout classes. I tell you. You don't realize how much you use your triceps. It's one of those muscle groups that are used ALL the time and when injured it's hard to rest. So appreciate all the supporting muscle groups in your body and don't take anything for granted! I got to my Zumba class today and I just love that class because it's so not me and takes me out of my comfort zone. I believe if you don't use it, you lose it so I love doing the class a couple of times a week to just get out there and shake my goods (smile)! I still have not tried pounding out push ups, but probably will get back to that next week. I'm so used to babying my arm now it feels weird to be able to go all out! So it was a good week on the workout front and getting back to Hot Yoga, TRX, etc… I have been able to keep up the running with no problem. BUT now I think I need to add in some speed workouts so I can keep up with the Boys come March! From what others have shared I got some fast little boys on the team and I plan to keep up and not be left in the dust!
On the work front all is going great! I've been working with customers on some custom orders so that's always fun! I'll be introducing my own line of lake signs within the next week or so! Sounds crazy but if you read my whistle post I'm also selling whistles - Click here to order one! I laugh because that product is selling like crazy! Again, an example of taking an idea and just making it happen! Life is about taking risks! Some risks work and some don't, but you don't know unless you try!
My husband &I had a date last night & we are headed out for another one tonight too! Two dates in a row now that's crazy (smile). I'm just living on the edge over here - tee hee! I did have to laugh because yesterday my husband and I did a little research regarding warm places to live. I casually mentioned to the kids that moving might be in our future but nothing is planned. My poor 8 year old started BAWLING insistently! I just looked at him and said "Anton, what is wrong" and he said "I'M NOT MOVING. I LOVE MY FRIENDS AND I AM NOT LEAVING THEM EVER". He seriously got all worked up and I said "Anton, I'm just talking. There is NO plans to move today or tomorrow, but maybe some day". I let him calm down. At night once he was in bed I asked him to just listen to me regarding change. I talked to him about the importance of being open minded when someone brings up a change and how really nothing stays the same in the world so it's better to embrace change and realize the good that can come from it. After I got done talking to him as if he was an adult (smile) he said "Mom, you are just going to have to deal with living in WI because I'm not moving". All I could do was laugh and tell him to have sweet dreams! I do not complain about the weather because it is what it is, but as I age I am learning I would rather be covered in warmth and surrounded by water all the time. AND if I am going to live where there is snow & cold, etc.. then I would rather be in the mountains, etc… Chances are I won't be moving anywhere any time soon, yet I just simply wanted to make a plug and a plug is what I got!
So that's all I got! I got the need for speed on my mind, I'm happy my triceps no longer hurts, business is good, etc... Like Anton, I do love my friends! I am blessed with how grounded they all are and how open minded they are to my craziness! Thanks for listening!
Below are some pictures of the kids and I last year during some fun runs. The thing about me is I've always been a long distance runner, so now I just have to change my focus to short distances which I am excited about. It's just been FOREVER since I ran a 5K. Lately I've been doing 1/2 marathons, etc… So I don't know if I even know how to just go out and run a fast 3 miles, but I will learn!
See you on the water and stay active!
